Uncle Sam was decapitated during a one-sided fight with a group of hooligans in Troy early Sunday morning.

The fiberglass American icon statue now rests in two pieces in a Troy police evidence locker while one of his alleged assailants sits in jail.

At approximately 2:45 a.m. Sunday. Sgt. Matthew Montanino saw a group of youths at the statue on Broadway between Church and Third Street. The group broke up and fled as Montanino approached, leaving the statue in ruins.

Montanino chased down one man a short distance from the scene. Michael J. Siler, 22, of 1946 Sixth Ave., Watervliet, was arrested and charged with second degree criminal mischief.

The Uncle Sam was ripped from his pedestal and separated from his head. The statue was one of 30 decorated by artists and set up around Troy earlier this spring. The 30 statues have been plagued by graffiti from the start.

Siler was arraigned Sunday morning in Troy Police Court.
