Donald Mason and his friends were ready to take on the world.

They were young, good-looking teenagers at Draper High School in Rotterdam. They were ready for leadership, as they had just been selected to lead the student council during the 1969-1970 school year.

Other members of the school set were large and in charge during June 1969. Prom season brought planning, posing and nights on the town in communities all over the Capital Region. Teens like Linton’s Kingston Holcomb and Sheila Rowe and Mohonasen’s Kathy Prokop won awards for scholastic skills.

And while some teens were preparing to close their books until September, Jo-An Palkovic and her colleagues at Mont Pleasant High School were hoping classmates would keep at least one book open. Jo-An had recently finished editing the “Mountaineer” yearbook, and kids all over school were signing pages — and signing off for the school year.
