Amateur baseball: Dutchmen strike early, turn back Pilots

The Albany Dutchmen scored five runs in the first inning and went on to defeat the Newark Pilots, 6-

ALBANY — The Albany Dutchmen scored five runs in the first inning and went on to defeat the Newark Pilots, 6-3, in a Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League game Sunday at Bellizzi Stadium.

Luke Nethaway (College of Saint Rose) was a triple short of the cycle as the Dutchmen improved to 2-0. Nethaway and Connor White each had RBI doubles in the first, and Nethaway also hit a solo home run in the fourth.

Mohawks lose

COOPERSTOWN — Brendan O’Reily went 4-for-5 and scored two runs to lift the Cooperstown Hawkeyes past the Amsterdam Mohawks, 9-3, in a Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League game at Doubleday Field.

Ryan Hanahan, who had a double among his two hits, drove in the tie-breaking run in the sixth for the Hawkeyes (2-0). .

Josh Gardiner led Amsterdam (1-1) with two hits. It was his second straight multihit game.

Brigade lose opener

MONTPELIER. Vt. — Matt MacDowell’s single in the third inning brought in what proved to be the game-winning run, and the Vermont Mountaineers spoiled the Saratoga Brigade’s debut in the New England Collegiate Baseball League with a 4-2 victory at Recreation Field.

The Brigade, who are scheduled to host the Ocean State Waves at 6:30 tonight at East Side Rec, scored both of their runs in the fourth. Zachary Zott walked and Brian O’Keefe followed with a single, and Zott came all the way home when the ball was misplayed. O’Keefe then scored on a groundout.

Blue Slate Takes two

ALBANY — The Blue Slate Bluehawks took advantage of four errors by the Albany Senators to win the second game of an Albany Twilight League double-header,

6-5, and complete a sweep.

Austin Chase pitched a two-hitter and struck out six to lead Blue Slate to a 1-0 win in the opener.

Curtis Nobles had a single and two RBI for Blue Slate (4-3) in Game 2, and Jared Jensen had a three-run double for the Senators (2-5).

Indians sweep

SCOTIA — Garrett Whitley scored on a squeeze bunt in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead the Schenectady County Indians to a 2-1 victory over the Lloyd Huskies in the first game of an American

Legion senior division double-header at Collins Park.

The Indians ran their overall record to 9-1 with a 10-0 win in the second game.

Whitley singled in the eighth, stole second and went to third on a groundout before scoring the winning run on a bunt by Dmitri Aldershoff.

Whitley went 3-for-4, and Dan Zeglen chipped in with a two-run double in the fifth inning. Zeglen struck out nine in six innings, but Joe Butler came on in relief in the seventh and got the victory.

Whitney had three RBI singles in the second game. Butler also got the victory in Game 2. Lucas Teti and Zeglen each scored two runs, and Teti also stole three bases.

Indians rally

ROTTERDAM — Mario Isopo’s two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Schenectady Indians to a 4-3 victory over the Lake George Wolfpack in an ENYT game at Schalmont High School.

Carmen Caruso had three singles for the Indians (2-0), and Greg Musk added two singles.

Rangers sweep

ROTTERDAM — Justin Relyea brought in the only run in the first game with a squeeze bunt, and also had two singles in the nightcap as the Rotterdam Rangers swept an Eastern New York Travel League U22 double-header with the Electric City Charge by scores of 1-0 and 13-1.

Tyler Demers had two singles and scored the only run in the first game.

Nick Perkins and Mike Chisari each had two singles and two RBI in Game 2, and Joe Paskevich had two doubles.
