A corrections officer at Great Meadow Correctional Facility in Washington County is home recovering after being stabbed multiple times on Wednesday by an inmate, according to a news release from the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association.
The officer went to the emergency room after being stabbed in the head and lower torso by an inmate using a homemade prison knife. The attack happened while the inmate was being transported to breakfast.
The inmate accused of the attack is currently serving a life sentence for second-degree murder and is expected to now face a charge of attempted murder following this incident.
Union President Don Rowe said it was fortunate that the injuries sustained were not more severe considering how dangerous it is to be a correction officer.
“The reality is that our members face this kind of danger everyday,” he said in a news statement.
