Bicyclists will pause to remember one of their own Sunday during the David Ryan Memorial Bike Ride sponsored by the Mohawk Hudson Cycling Club.
GE Global Research scientist and dedicated bicyclist David Ryan was killed June 29, 2004, by a speeding motorist while riding his bicycle on Riverview Road in Clifton Park.
Riders will pedal Ryan’s last route Sunday and stop for a short memorial ceremony beside the Ghost Bike placed near the crash site in his honor.
A Ghost Bike is a bicycle completely painted white and adorned with a memorial plaque. The bikes are permanent fixtures at locations where a cyclist has been killed while riding.
Sunday’s 29-mile River Loop ride will start at ShopRite Plaza in Niskayuna. Riders will gather in the lower plaza parking lot at 9 a.m. and the ride will begin at 9:30 a.m.
Bicyclists will stay together until the stop for the memorial ceremony and then may finish at their own pace.
The event will be held rain or shine and is open to the public.
