A proposed $30 million, 133-unit elderly care facility cleared one bureaucratic obstacle this month, but is still subject to additional review.

The Town Board, at its June 5 meeting, approved a planned development district on Route 146 east of Route 9, a site that is also envisioned as the eventual home for a hospital or medical offices. The proposed assisted living facility would cater to residents with memory loss and employ about 100 people.

At the meeting, Town Board member John P. Wasielewski said the project is optimal for the town, noting a local demand, the potential for expanding the tax base and minimal traffic impact. He threw his strong support behind the project, which received the special zoning without any opposition on the board.

Kevin Dailey, an attorney for property owner Boni Enterprises, said at the meeting he hoped the board’s decision would serve as a catalyst that will get the project going.

Director of Planning Richard Harris said the town Planning Board still needs to approve a minor subdivision and site plan for the facility. At Monday’s Planning Board meeting, a public hearing was set for July 22 on the subdivision.
