Gov. Andrew Cuomo warned people this afternoon who live in areas prone to flooding to be on high alert.

“It is a dangerous situation," the governor said during a news conference this afternoon in Montgomery County. "People should use more than normal prudence during this period of time. If you're in an area that you know normally floods, be prepared, be on guard... Have the necessary preparations if you have to move quickly”

Cuomo took an aerial tour of the damage, which stretched across the Mohawk Valley, and said there was significant damage in some areas. He added that about 100 miles of the Erie Canal had been damaged by the flooding, with debris causing significant damage to gate openings along the canal.

He urged people to be wary of their surroundings, saying they wanted to prevent circumstances that might put official first responders in danger.

“We will get through this like we have gotten through far wore than this in the past," Cuomo said.
