A mandatory evacuation order was issued Monday evening in the village of Fort Plain.
The order, posted on the Montgomery County Emergency Management office’s Facebook page, said homes affected were along Abbott Street, Reid Street south of the Route 80 bridge and along Route 80 south to the County Line. Residents are ordered to evacuate their homes.
As the Otsquago Creek rose rapidly shortly after 8 p.m. Monday, police announced were going door to door insisting that everyone leave their homes for higher ground. Scanner traffic indicated "severe flash flooding."
The Fort Plain Elementary School, 25 High St., was open as a shelter.
UPDATE: The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning until 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday for the village. Additional rainfall of half an inch to one inch is possible, which will contribute to excessive runoff that could cause flooding of creeks and stream. Country roads, farmlands and other low lying areas are subject to flooding.
