A Gloversville man has been charged with assault after hitting a man in the back of the head with a rock near the Country Farms convenience store on Thursday, police said.

Joshua Coadney, 36, was taken into custody at gunpoint around 7:45 p.m. after police were dispatched to the area of South Main and Broad streets, near the Rail Trail, for a report a male had been stabbed in the head.

Coadney later told police he struck the 49-year-old male victim in the head with a large rock because the victim was being physically abusive to a woman. Police said they received no report of such abuse.

Police said the victim told them Coadney lured him outside and onto the Rail Trail, then grabbed a rock and struck him in the back of the head. After that, the victim said Coadney pulled out a knife and threatened him. The victim walked away and went to a nearby residence for assistance. He was treated at Nathan Littauer Hospital and released.

Coadney was charged with second-degree assault, a class D felony and second-degree menacing, a misdemeanor.
