A Friday afternoon fire destroyed a house on Route 162 in the town of Esperance.

A Friday afternoon fire destroyed a house on Route 162 in the town of Esperance.

Schoharie County Fire Coordinator Matt Brisley said the owners of the house called 911 about 3:40 p.m. Fighting the blaze in 100-degree weather took a toll on the 10 fire departments called to the scene, Brisley said.

“The time of day, our manpower was short, and with the heat, we had to constantly rotate them in and out,” he said.

At least one firefighter was taken to the hospital with a heat-related injury, Brisley said.

Firefighters are still investigating the cause of the fire, but Brisley said they have determined it began in the attached garage.

The house was a total loss, but the residents — two adults — got out safely, Brisley said.
