Albany police are investigating an incident in which a 9-year-old child allegedly accidently shot himself in the hand.

At approximately 6:15 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to the 300 block of Orange Street in Albany’s West Hill neighborhood for a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, they said they learned that a boy had suffered a single gunshot wound to his hand and had been transported to Albany Medical Center by private vehicle.

Detectives said they spoke with the child at the hospital. The boy allegedly told them he found a handgun in the rear yard of a home on Orange Street and accidently shot himself in the hand while handling it.

He was treated at the hospital and was released.

The gun has yet to be recovered. The investigation is ongoing.
