Amateur baseball: Ebert, Urbanski spark Mohawks in playoff opener

AMSTERDAM — Jordan Ebert drove in two runs, and Mike Urbanski pitched into and out of trouble in the ninth inning as the Amsterdam Mohawks beat the Albany Dutchmen, 4-2, in Game 1 of their Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League Eastern Division final at Shuttleworth Park.

The best-of-three series moves to Bellizzi Field in Albany tonight at 7.

With the Mohawks leading, 4-1, Urbanski came on in relief of Colonie’s Chris Kalica to start the Albany ninth. He gave up singles to Fonda-Fultonville graduate Luke Nethaway and Jordan Brock, and after getting a strikeout, surrendered an RBI single to Anthony Marks.

Urbanski, who played at CBA, recovered to give the Mohawks, shooting for their fourth championship in five years, the series lead.

Ebert homered to lead off the third inning, and Kyle Barrett added a sacrifice fly later in the inning as Amsterdam took a 2-0 lead.

Albany got a run back in the seventh on a Marks groundout, but Amsterdam answered when Ebert hit a sac fly in the home seventh.

Ed Charlton added an RBI double in the eighth, the Mohawks’ fourth and final hit of the game.

Amsterdam starter Matt Snyder, also a Colonie High grad, gave up four hits in 6 2⁄3 innings. Kalica finished the seventh and pitched the eighth, striking out five and not giving up a hit.

GUILDERLAND — Kyle Meyer singled home Fred Estes with the winning run in the top of the 12th inning as the Blue Slate Bluehawks beat North Haledon (N.J.), 6-5, in the first round of the AABC North Atlantic Regional tournament.

Estes and catcher Andrew Stanton both had three hits for 27-8 Blue Slate, the Albany Twilight League playoff champion. Stanton drove in three runs as Blue Slate moved into today’s 2 p.m. winner’s bracket game at Keenholts Park against league rival Albany Athletics.

Bill Lawton threw a three-hitter and struck out 12 as the A’s edged the Westchester Hawks, 1-0.

Cam Oathout scored from second base on an error in the bottom of the seventh for the only run of the game,

The Athletics were held to a pair of hits.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Zach Looney and Dylan Butler both drove in a pair of runs as the Saratoga Brigade beat the North Adams SteepleCats, 6-4, in the first game of a New England College Baseball League double-header at East Side Rec.

North Adams won the second game, 3-0, as Trevor Scott threw a four-hitter.

The Brigade (21-23) will play today at 6:30 at Holyoke, the winner advancing to the playoffs.

CLIFTON PARK — Kurt Forsell, Mike Spulnick and Ian Anderson combined on a two-hitter as the Clifton Park Knights beat Kingston, 9-0, in the 14U Babe Ruth Middle Atlantic Regional.

Spulnick and Justin Geary both had two singles and a run batted in, and Ian Anderson also had two singles as the Knights finished pool play 4-0. Kingston is now 2-1.

Clifton Park advanced to Sunday’s 7:30 p.m. semifinal.

NISKAYUNA — Gabe Anton­ikowski had two hits and drove in three runs as host Niskayuna beat Horseheads, 6-2, in the 13U Babe Ruth Middle Atlantic Regional.

Niskayuna improved to 3-0, and finishes pool play today against 1-2 Prince George, Md. A win would put Niskayuna into Sunday’s 8 p.m. semifinal.

Horseheads had lost to Prince George, 12-11, earlier in the day; and College Point picked up its first win in Pool A by beating Prince George, 10-4.
