A Pattersonville man is dead after he pulled his car out of a Stewart's on Route 5 in Glenville and into the path of a truck, police said. In a twist of fate, the two drivers were friends who had just met 30 minutes prior to the accident.

Glenville police are investigating the accident, which occurred Friday just after 5 p.m. at the Route 5 and Route 103 intersection.

Police said that 21-year-old Luke J. Mitchell, of Pattersonville, disregarded a red light and pulled out of the Stewart's in his 1998 Subaru. At the same time, 25-year-old Sam A. Orologio, of Rotterdam Junction, was headed west on Route 5 in his 2000 Ford truck and was about to drive through the intersection when his friend pulled out.

Mitchell was taken to Ellis Hospital, but pronounced dead a short time later. Orologio suffered an elbow injury, but declined medical attention.

Police say that just half an hour before the collision, Mitchell stopped by Orologio's place of work.

Alcohol may have been a factor on Mitchell's part, police said. An autopsy will be performed today.

Glenville police received help from the Schenectady County Sheriff's Department, Scotia police, Beukendaal Fire Department and Mohawk Ambulance. A Med Flight landed near the scene Friday, but authorities decided to send Mitchell to Ellis by ambulance instead.
