The Saratoga Hospital annual benefit auction, held on July 31 on the grounds at Saratoga Casino & Raceway, raised a record of $591,367 this year.
Of the record number of donations, $100,000 came from Marylou Whitney and her husband, John Hendrickson, in honor of Saratoga Hospital Foundation Executive Director Terry Lee.
“Like so many organizations in our community, Saratoga Hospital has a true friend — and a treasure — in Marylou Whitney,” Saratoga Hospital President and CEO Angelo Calbone said. “Year after year, we’ve benefited from her extraordinary generosity and her ability to inspire others to join her in supporting Saratoga Hospital.”
Of the money raised, $490,187 with go toward the endowment for the hospital’s new Saratoga Community Health Center. The remaining funds from Whitney and Hendrickson will benefit the hospital’s new intensive care unit.
Before the bidding began at the auction, Calbone announced the hospital’s new intensive care unit will be know as, “The Marylou Whitney and Desmond DelGiacco, MD, Intensive Care Unit.”
The name also acknowledges DelGiacco’s 30 years of service to ICU patients and their families.
“Marylou Whitney and Des DelGiacco have something very important in common: their love and commitment to the people of Saratoga,” Calbone said. “Soon they will have something else in common: Our new intensive care unit will be named in their honor.”
