Lord & Taylor will make a comeback in the Capital Region next fall.
The luxury retail department store chain is planning to open its 12th location in New York state at Crossgates Mall, nearly a decade after it closed its store there. Construction will begin in January, and the store is expected to open by fall 2014.
“Lord & Taylor is thrilled to be expanding into the Capital Region with its fourth full-line store in upstate New York,” said Eileen DiLeo, executive vice president of stores at Lord & Taylor parent company, the Hudson’s Bay Co. “We believe Lord & Taylor’s assortment of approachable fashion is perfect for the Albany market. We have high expectations for the store and are looking forward to serving the community.”
In 2003, the company announced that its Crossgates store would close, along with 33 other Lord & Taylor stores across the country. The move was said to be due to poor sales and a weak market.
At two stories and 100,000 square feet, the new store promises to feature “a well-edited assortment of premier designers” in women’s ready-to-wear, shoes, accessories, beauty and men’s fashion, according to a news release issued Tuesday.
Founded in 1826, Lord & Taylor is America’s oldest department store. Today it operates 48 full-line stores in 10 states and the District of Columbia, as well as four outlet stores and an online store.
“We are proud to welcome Lord & Taylor to Crossgates Mall,” said mall General Manager Joseph Castaldo in the release. “This premier fashion retailer will significantly add to the shopping experience for Crossgates Mall and the Capital Region. Our shoppers continually ask us to bring only the best and most exciting retailers to Crossgates Mall, and we’ve accomplished that again with Lord & Taylor. This addition to the center further solidifies the mall’s position as the dominant shopping center in the region.”
