A volunteer firefighter was run over by a tow truck after a four-car accident Tuesday evening, state police said.

A firefighter from the West Crescent Fire Department was performing fire police duties and helping to clear the scene of the accident on the Northway Exit 8 southbound off-ramp when the flatbed truck loaded with a car knocked him down and the tires rolled over him. He was rushed to Albany Medical Center and was in surgery late Tuesday for serious injuries, police said.

State police did not release his identity, but described him as in his 60s.

The ramp was closed just before 6 p.m. for the accident, according to the state Department of Transportation.
