Ben Funyak’s successful suicide squeeze in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Niskayuna past Guernsey Valley, Ohio, 12-11, in a back-and-forth pool opener Saturday at the Babe Ruth World Series for 13-year-olds at Ardean Aafedt Stadium.

Funyak’s bunt with the bases loaded and one down brought home Matt Toy, and capped a four-run rally after Niskayuna had let an early 8-3 lead get away.

Liam Davison sparked Niskayuna’s six-run second inning with a two-run double. Davison also singled and finished with three RBI.

Toy began the seventh-inning scoring with an RBI single. Toy and Funyak both had two RBI, while Conor Graham reached base four times and scored three runs.

Gabe Antonikowski was the last of five Niskayuna pitchers, hurling the final two innings to gain the victory. He escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the sixth to keep Guernsey Valley (Ohio Valley Region) off the board.

Niskayuna notched a pair of one-run victories at the Middle Atlantic Regional Tournament, taking one of them on a late suicide squeeze by Toy.

Niskayuna will play Lawrenceburg, Tenn. (Southeast Region), Monday night at 9 in its second of four pool contests.
