Almost fall, and Joan McDonnell Cain can remember her high school’s football games.

“What was always a lot of fun was Election Day,” she said. “We had the rivalry between Mont Pleasant and Linton — everybody came to those games. It was a big thing in Schenectady.”

Cain cheered for Mont Pleasant — as a member of the class of 1963, she was rooting for the red and white. Teens on the field and in the stands will return to their memories — as adults — this month. Graduates from 1963 will conduct their 50th anniversary reunion at Mallozzi’s Clubhouse at Western Turnpike Golf Course in Guilderland on Saturday, Sept. 14.

Cain and her friend Bobbi Saxby Koretnicki are on the reunion committee. Both remember their lives and times from 50 years ago.

“We used to have pajama parties,” said Cain, who now lives in Glenville. “We usually sat around and talked, giggled probably.”

Cain lived on Altamont Avenue during her Mont Pleasant days, near the now-defunct Shoporama shopping plaza. She had to walk about five miles to — and from — school every day.

Fun things to do

Rotterdam resident Koretnicki remembers going on hayrides with classmates on Blue Barns Road in Rexford. Movies with sensations of the day such as Elvis Presley were popular with girls. “You couldn’t hear the movie because all the girls were screaming,” Cain said.

Petta’s restaurant on Duane Avenue was one popular hangout. Sonny’s Restaurant on Webster Street was another, and a place for double dates. “We used to get a pizza and we used to play darts with our boyfriends — and we’d beat them,” Koretnicki said.

Terry Cain and Jack Koretnicki from Mont Pleasant’s Class of 1962 were the guys on the losing sides. But they won the girls in the end, marrying Joan and Bobbi.

The reunion weekend will also include a tour of the former Mont Pleasant High School — now Mont Pleasant Middle School — on Sept. 14. The walk-through will begin at 10 a.m. A golf outing at the Edison Club in Rexford has been planned for Sunday, Sept. 15.

Class members with any questions about the reunion events are asked to contact Koretnicki at 381-6140.
