Area College Football: Pair of passing scores sink Union in opener

Connor Butkiewicz threw two touchdowns in the last three minutes of the second quarter to stake Utica College to a 22-9 lead, and it held on late for a 25-16 win over Union College on Saturday.

Butkiewicz was 22-for-41 with 237 yards and the two scores, throwing two interceptions.

Union’s Connor Eck threw for 261 yards and a score, tossing two interceptions while going 24-for-42. Eck also ran for a touchdown.

Utica (2-0) got on the board first when Sean Hulser returned an interception 30 yards for a score. The Dutchmen (0-1) came back in the second quarter with a 30-yard David Pope field goal and Eck’s

61-yard scoring pass to T.J. Franzese, going up, 9-7, with 5:34 left in the half.

Then Butkiewicz found Anthony Acevedo twice before the break, once from eight yards out with 2:27 left, then from 13 yards out with 26 seconds left.

ALFRED — Junior kicker Andrew Franks made five of five field goals, including a school-record 50-yarder in the second quarter, to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to a close win.

Franks also was successful on a 45-yard try and one for 40 yards. He opened the game with a 31-yard field goal, and he closed it with a 37-yard field goal with 1:04 left to play, giving the Engineers (2-0) their final margin of victory.

The teams then traded interceptions on their final drives. RPI’s Nick Borkowski and Philip Lanieri both intercepted Alfred’s Dominic Scavo. Anthony Gawrys (Columbia) and Joseph Paulus both recorded a sack.

Nick Schlatz ran for a touchdown, and Andrew Armato had 115 yards on 27 carries.

Austin Dwyer ran for 56 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries for Alfred (0-1).
