Jonathan Davis landed a role in “Pippin” during the fall of 1983.

The young actor managed to snag a role for a friend, too. Quackers the duck played himself in director Joe Fava’s play for the Schenectady Light Opera Company. Mark A. Heckler won the title role, and the acting troupe rehearsed through fall for December presentations.

Davis owned Quackers, who might have been heading for the big time. He had an alias, as he also was identified as Qwackers in the Schenectady Gazette.

Firefighters, book lovers, party people, activists, singers and pumpkin shoppers also were Gazette photo subjects in September 1983. Rotterdam District 2 firefighters planned a fundraising drive while Friends of the Schenectady County Public Library scheduled a fall book sale.

The Friends’ book sale tradition continues — this autumn’s sale at the main library will be held Saturday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

A ham supper, bake sale, flea market and arts and crafts were all part of West Glenville Village Community Day, which was held Oct. 1. Folks who were against nuclear arms rallied at Schenectady’s Nuclear Freeze Walkathon, another event that took place Oct. 1. The 10-kilometer walk started at Union College.

Jonathan Edwards and Nicolette Larson, part of the touring production of “Pump Boys and Dinettes” at Proctors in Schenectady, did a little publicity for the show. They filled up a car gas tank at Ladd’s service station on Erie Boulevard.

Michael Messercola was ready for September to end. He found his pumpkin for October on Sept. 22, and began the long, 40-day wait until Halloween.
