Plane wreck removed from Edinburg crash scene (updated)

Investigators continue to look into the plane crash that killed a veteran state police investigator

Investigators continue to look into the plane crash that killed a veteran state police investigator Sunday, but have concluded their work at the crash scene.

A flat-bed tow truck left Tange Road on Monday afternoon with the charred wreckage of his small aircraft strapped under tarps.

State troopers and firefighters removed road blocks and coiled crime scene tape, opening Tange Road in Edinburg less than 24 hours after off-duty state police Investigator Timothy Cowper, 55, of Middle Grove crashed in his aerobatic biplane just feet from the road.

The Pitts S-1 lost altitude just out of Plateau Sky Ranch airport around 3:50 Sunday afternoon, coming down in a wooded area west of the Batchellerville bridge over Great Sacandaga Lake. Cowper was killed on impact and the craft burst into flames. He was the only occupant of the plane.

Cowper was a member of the Adirondack chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association. He and a handful of other members from surrounding communities were participating in a poker run, a game in which pilots fly to various small airports collecting stamps. According to Edinburg Town Justice Doug Sterling, a fellow EAA member, the group had a cookout shortly before the crash.

Cowper had held a pilot’s license for many years and was an experienced pilot, state police officials said. He had survived an earlier crash, in 2008.
