A new gym has opened in Rotterdam, but it’s far from what you might expect.

The Fitness Factory will offer boot camp classes that provide personal attention and direct instruction in a small-group atmosphere. Workouts are nontraditional, using ropes, tires, agility ladders, hurdles and more.

Co-owners Dan Papa and Courtney Phillips celebrated the grand opening last week at 1520 Altamont Ave. Papa grew up in the Rotterdam area, where he ran a plumbing business for 13 years. Both were personal trainers before opening the business together. In a news release issued by the Chamber of Schenectady County, they said the limitations of traditional gym equipment stoked their desire to create the Fitness Factory.

Fitness Factory members range in age from 12 to 75. Some have never worked out before, while others are professional athletes and marathon runners.

Class schedules can be found online at www.fftrainers.com.
