Police said on Sunday they believe the proprietor of Bayshores Tropic Hut stabbed his mother to death during a violent altercation and then took his own life with a long gun 12 hours later.
Lt. John Catone said John Ambrozak, 47, got into a violent fight with 75-year-old Patricia Ambrozak then stabbed her to death inside a mobile home near the Union Avenue bar she owned. The stabbing occurred during the pre-dawn hours Monday, he said. The son then remained at the home for about 12 hours before fatally shooting himself.
An acquaintance discovered the bodies on Friday after not hearing from the family for several days. The two had a tumultuous relationship, according to some who knew them, and police records show a prior domestic incident in 2011 where John Ambrozak was arrested for assaulting his mother.
The deaths occurred at the Saratoga Lake Marine Park, a collection of 15 to 20 aging mobile homes packed tightly together next to the Tropic Hut, a small bar with an associated marina. They are located immediately west of the bridge where Saratoga Lake gives way to its Fish Creek outlet.
Patricia Ambrozak was the owner, while her son ran the bar and restaurant. Her parents — Henry and Josephine Gwiazdowsk — purchased the Bayshore Tavern in 1955 and operated it for decades.
The bar was not open Friday, but had done business last Sunday.
