Junior Ryan Haggerty scored two goals ,and sophomore Jason Kasdorf stopped all 13 shots he faced to lead the 15th-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute hockey team to a 6-0 seasoon-opening victory over Sacred Heart University Saturday at Webster Bank Arena.
Haggerty took a feed from behind the net by senior captain Matt Tinordi and buried a shot past Sacred Heart junior goaltender Andrew Bodnarchuk for his first of the season at 16:34 of the opening frame.
After not scoring again for the remainder of the first period, the Engineers found the back of the net three times in the second to open up the game. Senior Brock Higgs made it 2-0 at 4:31, before Haggerty score his second of the contest, on the power-play, at 9:20. Sophomore Mike Zalewski made it 4-0 after nifty passing from Higgs, and classmate Milos Bubela set him up.
The Engineers added a pair of insurance goals in the third period, including a short-handed tally by Tinordi with just over three minutes to play.
Kasdorf was forced to just make 13 saves in the game, while Bodnarchuk finished with 26 stops.
The Engineers are back on the ice today, when they visit fourth-ranked Boston College at 3 p.m.
