Veterans looking for work will find more than 65 employers eager to check out applications during an event planned for Wednesday at the Latham headquarters of the state’s Division of Military and Naval Affairs.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce foundation last week announced the event as part of the Hiring Our Heroes program, an effort to get businesses involved in hiring 500,000 veterans by the end of 2014.

Since it started in 2011, a total of 20,200 veterans — and military spouses — have landed jobs, according to a release from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

During its campaign, the Chamber Foundation secured commitments from roughly 1,000 businesses pledging to hire 235,000 veterans.

Wednesday’s event will bring not only employers but also assistance in the form of an employment workshop.

Resume assistance, tools for job-searching and tips on interviewing techniques are among features of the workshop, according to the Chamber Foundation.

Several entities are involved in getting the event together, including the New York National Guard, the Albany-Colonie and the Rensselaer chambers of commerce, the state Department of Labor, the American Legion and others, according to the release.

Employers won’t just be bringing a folder to collect resumes. In order to participate, each employer had to agree to have at least five job vacancies available, according to a news release from the office of Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

“The state is committed to helping these men and women who have made sacrifices to serve our nation to find good paying civilian jobs,” Cuomo said in a release.

Veterans are facing a tougher time finding jobs than non-veterans, according to Cuomo’s release.

Department of Labor statistics released this summer showed post-9/11 veterans carried an unemployment rate of 7.4 percent compared with the unemployment rate of 7.2 percent nationwide.

People interested in the event can register at Veterans with proof of service can also just walk in.

The employment workshop, hosted by General Electric, will begin at 9 a.m. The hiring fair will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the New York National Guard Headquarters at 330 Old Niskayuna Rd., Latham.
