A Fulton County woman is being accused of accidentally starting a fire which authorities allege put the lives of six people at risk.

Mary Beth Bates, 29, of Dennie Road, Mayfield, was charged this morning with six counts of second-degree reckless endangerment and six counts of endangering the welfare of a child, according to a news release from the Gloversville Police Department.

The charges follow a grand jury review of the circumstances surrounding the May 19, 2013 fire at 44 Third St., according to the release.

Four adults and six children escaped the burning home unharmed.

Police this morning said the fire, which was put out by the Gloversville Fire Department, started in a first-floor laundry room the occupants used as a room for smoking. Bates, police allege, was intoxicated at the time the fire allegedly started.

Bates was arraigned in City Court and issued an appearance ticket.
