CarMax has applied to the village of Colonie to locate its second New York location at the site of the soon-to-close Kmart on Central Avenue.
The nation’s largest retailer of used cars confirmed Wednesday that it is interested in the site at 1060 Central Ave. Kmart will close its store there in mid-December; its lease was not renewed.
“We are always identifying sites like this that are in strong retail and auto corridors that can serve customers who are not currently being reached with the unique CarMax experience,” said CarMax spokesman Casey Werderman in an email. “Currently, we have an application pending for this site, and we will not schedule construction until we have approvals and have acquired the site.”
Werderman said it takes anywhere from one to three years to open a store once approvals have been secured. The company is currently in the process of opening a CarMax lot in Rochester. If the application is approved, the Colonie site would be the second New York location for the company.
Village Clerk Pat Hurley said the application is on the Planning Commission agenda for Tuesday. In it, CarMax is proposing to demolish the current Kmart store and a Burger King at the front of the approximately 11-acre site.
“They would be totally redeveloping the site,” she said. “Everything would come down.”
CarMax, a Fortune 500 company, has about 35,000 cars online, said Werderman. Each physical store typically has between 250 and 400 vehicles on the lot.
