Town officials are asking residents to conserve water as they fix a break in a large-diameter water main on Mohawk Road.
The main ruptured late this afternoon, and crews are continuing to work on the break, which has been isolated. Repairs are expected to continue late into the evening, so the town is requesting residents limit water consumption.
County officials have been alerted to the break, but there is no boil-water advisory anticipated at this time. Water in parts of the system may become slightly discolored due to the increased volume of water flowing through the pipes at higher-than-normal velocities, according to a message posted on the town website.
The slightly discolored water is still safe to drink, according to the town. Residents are advised against washing clothes with the water, though, since it could cause discoloration.
Further details will be provided as they become available on the town’s website, www.niskayuna.org.
