BETHLEHEM — A Pennsylvania trucker was killed early Friday when he was run over by his own tandem tractor-trailer on the New York State Thruway.
State police arrived at 3:11 a.m. to find the truck and two trailers blocking all southbound lanes just south of Exit 23. The highway remained closed to southbound traffic for several hours as the accident was investigated, causing rush hour delays, but all lanes were reopened by 8:30 a.m.
Late Friday, investigators said they had determined that the driver, Jeffrey T. Schertzer, 45, of Lemoyne, Pa., pulled to the shoulder and exited the truck for an unknown reason. The rig began to roll, and then ran over him. A short distance later, it hit the center barrier in the middle of the highway and came to a rest across the road.
No other vehicles were involved and no one else was injured. Police are continuing their investigation.
