Schenectady man faces felony for allegedly trying to destroy pill

A man who had faced only misdemeanors saw a felony charge added to the list when he allegedly tried

A man who had faced only misdemeanors saw a felony charge added to the list when he allegedly tried to destroy pills as he was being arrested, authorities said.

Jacob J. Kownack, 35, of 133 Elm St., was being arrested Saturday afternoon for allegedly helping take 15 cans of Red Bull energy drink from the Eastern Parkway Price Chopper when police say he tried to destroy the pills, according to papers filed in court.

After being placed in the back of a patrol car, officers heard scraping on the rear floor and discovered Kownack allegedly trying to crush a pill of Alprazolam, a controlled substance commonly known as Xanax, according to papers.

He is charged with a one count each of misdemeanor seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and felony tampering with physical evidence — for allegedly possessing and destroying the pill — as well as misdemeanor petty larceny related to the Red Bull.
