Man convicted of trying to lure Saratoga County teen for sex

A Level 3 sex offender from Rochester, arrested last year and accused of trying to lure a Saratoga County teen for sex, was convicted last month of all three counts against him, prosecutors announced Wednesday.

John L. Dooley, 56, was convicted Oct. 10 after trial in U.S. District Court in Binghamton of counts that included attempted enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity.

He faces at least 45 years in federal prison at his February sentencing and up to life in prison.

Dooley was accused of trying to lure a local 15-year-old girl to a motel after allegedly meeting her online in a Yahoo chat room. The “girl” was actually an undercover Saratoga Springs police investigator.

Dooley was arrested by Saratoga Springs police as he attempted to enter the motel on South Broadway in May 2012.

He was listed in the state sex offender registry as a Level 3 offender — the highest risk to re-offend. He was convicted in Monroe County in 2001 of second-degree sodomy involving a 12-year-old victim, records show. Sentencing is set for Feb. 10.
