Proposal would speed, simplify care of veterans

A senator says a snafu is delaying some care to veterans and slowing benefit checks.

ALBANY — A senator says a snafu is delaying some care to veterans and slowing benefit checks.

Sen. Charles Schumer of New York is proposing bills that would force the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs to use computer software that can read the same health records.

Right now, they can't. That has delayed action on cases of service men and women after they leave active duty and seek veteran health care.

Schumer also proposes to hire claims processors to end a backlog that has some veterans waiting up to 400 days for a benefit check.

Schumers says there are more than 1,000 backlogged cases in every region of the state. He seeks to include the proposals in the National Defense Authorization Act, which will reach the Senate floor in coming weeks.
