Led by Shereesha Richards, the University at Albany women’s basketball team put together a 20-6 run

Led by Shereesha Richards, the University at Albany women’s basketball team put together a 20-6 run in the second half to get past Marist on Thursday at SEFCU Arena, 69-59.

The Great Danes trailed, 35-30, at the half but came back to tie it up, 45-45, on a jumper by Sarah Royals. Marist answered with a bucket from Madeline Blais to regain the lead, 47-45, before UAlbany went on its run to pull away.

Richards had eight of her game-high 28 points during the 10 1⁄2-minute run, and Royals had six of her 15 points in that stretch.

Richards also grabbed 15 rebounds for a double-double. She was 10-for-12 from the field and 8-for-10 from the free-throw line.

Royals grabbed eight rebounds and handed out eight assists without a turnover.

Though Royals finished with no giveaways, the Great Danes turned the ball over 14 times. Marist had 12 points off turnovers, all on six takeaways in the first half.

UAlbany had 14 points off the nine turnovers it created.

The Great Danes had 34 points in the paint to 18 for Marist.

UAlbany also got 11 points from Tammy Phillip.

Marist was led by Leanne Ockenden with 18 points and six rebounds. Emma O’Connor had 17 points, and Blais finished with 16.

The Red Foxes fell to 0-2 on the season.

The Great Danes improved to 3-0 overall and have won each game by double digits. They will host Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday night at 7.
