It was another close call for the youthful Siena College men’s basketball team.

Tyreek Duren scored 20 points, with 14 of those coming in the final eight minutes, as La Salle rallied back to defeat the Saints, 78-74, Saturday.

The Explorers (2-1) trailed by eight points midway through the second half before closing the game on a 22-10 run.

Duren made a layup that was answered by a jumper from Evan Hymes. Duren then hit two straight three-pointers and netted another layup to tie the score at 66-66.

A Jerrell Wright dunk gave La Salle the lead, and Duren scored a jumper to extend it to four.

Following a Brett Bisping layup, D.J. Peterson had a three-point play. Duren and Sam Mills both made two late free throws to keep La Salle on top.

Duren was one of four Explorers in double figures as Wright finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Mills added 13.

Rob Poole led the Saints (0-3) with 21 points. Lavon Long added 11 points and nine rebounds, while Evan Hymes chipped in with 11 points.

“Our young guys came into one of the toughest situations in the country, against a really tough team that went to the Sweet 16, and we played great for 40 minutes,” Siena head coach Jimmy Patsos said. “We didn’t do everything perfect, but we did a lot of great things.”

Siena hosts St. Bonaventure Tuesday night.
