The Saratoga Springs girls’ cross country team was edged by one point Saturday in the New York State

The Saratoga Springs girls’ cross country team was edged by one point Saturday in the New York State Federation Cross Country Championships, finishing runner-up to John Jay Cross River over the 5,000-meter course at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls.

Saratoga’s top finisher was Samantha Vetter, who was the first eighth-grader to cross the line, finishing 28th in 19:33.3. Other scoring runners for the Blue Streaks were Spencer Hayes (47th, 19:50.4), Estela Smith (60th, 20:01.0), Gabrielle Robens (71, 20:09.3) and Carly Vetter (74, 20:12.4). Carly Vetter was fourth among eighth-graders.

The Blue Streaks had 154 points to John Jay Cross River’s 153. Queensbury was third with 188, Colonie was seventh with 252 and Guilderland was 12th with 290.

The top local finisher was Shenendehowa’s Danielle Jordan. She was 16th in 19:08.5. Guilderland’s Emily Burns was 25th in 19:26.2.

Colonie’s Kathryn Tenney was the only seventh-grader in the race, completing the course in 19:55.2, good for 53rd overall. Queensbury’s Danielle Soprano was the third eighth-grader, finishing 54th in 19:55.6.

Emily Guinther was the top finisher for Queensbury, finishing 40th in 19:45.1. Other scorers for the Spartans were Sherri Metcalfe (62nd, 20:02.8), Megan Kellogg (77th, 20:17.5) and Elxis Bartlet (91st, 20:26.8).

The individual girls’ champion was Corning freshman Jessica Lawson, who crossed the line in 18:16.2.

The Saratoga boys finished fourth with 222 points. Liverpool was the top boys’ team with 75 points. Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake was 15th with 371 points.

Saratoga’s Aidan Tooker was the top local finisher, completing the course in 16:03.6 for fifth place. Col-umbia’s Kyle Gronostaj was 11th in 16:11.7. The race was won by Pearl River senior Brian Cook in 15:45.2.

Tooker was the top-finishing sophomore in the race. Guilderland’s Noah Carey was the second freshman to finish (44th, 16:44.9).

Other scoring runners for Saratoga were Brent Freestone (24th, 16:34.9), Joe Verro (72nd, 17:08.2), Eathan North (93rd, 17:22.1) and Jay Nevin (126th, 17:39.5).
