A city man stands accused of trying to hold up a store by putting his finger in his jacket and telling the store owner he had a gun, authorities said.

Leslie Hampton, 47, of 927 State St., allegedly tried to rob the S&D Grocery at 951 State St. on Sunday evening, according to papers filed in court.

Finger at the ready, he allegedly told the store owner that he had a gun and would shoot him unless the owner handed over cash, according to papers.

The incident ended when the owner’s nephew pushed the store’s panic alarm.

Hampton faces one count of first-degree attempted robbery, a felony.
