ALBANY — Some of the nation's biggest and most politically influential financial supporters of environmental and civic causes are joining the renewed effort to bring public financing of campaigns to New York state.

Deep-pocketed benefactors including the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and The New York Foundation wrote Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday. They're urging him to press for public financing to combat the influence of corporate campaign donations that they say block important environmental initiatives. The letter was obtained by The Associated Press.

A proposal to use public money to fund a voluntary system of campaign financing was defeated earlier this year by the Senate's Republicans, who share majority control of the chamber. They argue that scarce state funds are better used for schools.
