State backs biomedical research center in Adirondacks

New York state will provide up to $35 million to boost efforts in the Adirondacks to develop a world

ALBANY — New York state will provide up to $35 million to boost efforts in the Adirondacks to develop a world-class biotech research and development operation.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday announced the partnership with Clarkson University in Potsdam and the Trudeau Institute in Saranac Lake.

Cuomo says the goal is to create a premier center of biotechnology research and development by combining Clarkson's immunology research facilities and Trudeau's work in immunology and infectious disease control.

The officials hope the enterprise will spin off jobs and companies in the North Country, where the economy is largely dependent on seasonal tourism.

The state funding is spread over five years.
