State police arrested a Gallupville man on felony assault charges after he allegedly used pliers to remove three permanent teeth from the mouth of a mentally handicapped 8-year-old foster child under his care.

Steven D. Walker, 34, was arraigned on two counts of assault, along with two misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child, in Richmondville Town Court and sent to the Schoharie County jail in lieu of bail.

Investigators said the child was complaining about mouth pain at school, prompting a visit to her regular dentist. Under examination, the dentist discovered three of the girl's teeth had been forcibly extracted.

The dentist reported the case to Schoharie County Child Protective Services, which contacted state police investigators.

A state police forensic odontologist and an oral surgeon examined the girl, who was removed from the home at the onset of the investigation.

Investigators believe the girl's teeth were forcibly removed with an implement resembling pliers. Walker is scheduled to appear Monday in Wright Town Court.
