ERIE, Pa. - Nick Jones scored twice and assisted on Daniel O’Donoghue’s game-winning goal late in the third period Friday, helping Mercyhurst to a 5-2 men’s college hockey non-conference upset of 14th-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

It was the third straight loss for the Engineers (6-5-2), who were making their first trip to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania since Nov. 28, 1972, when they faced Penn. RPI hasn’t won a game in the Keystone State since beating Penn, 11-5, on Dec. 13, 1966.

Jones gave the Lakers (5-6-1) a 1-0 lead 4:22 into the game. But the Engineers came back and had a 2-1 lead after the first on goals by Phil Hampton and Chris Bradley. It was the first goals of the season for the defensemen.

Chris Bodo tied it for Mercyhurst with 7:01 left in the second period. Jones then set up O’Donoghue’s tiebreaking goal with 4:55 to go in the third.

The Lakers added a pair of empty-net to clinch their second straight win and improve to 4-1-1 in their last six. Matthew Zay got the first one with 1:19 to go.

An O’Donoghue slashing penalty with 24.8 seconds left gave RPI a last-gasp power play, but Jones scored with 17.5 seconds remaining.

The Engineers were without right winger Ryan Haggerty, the nation’s leading goal scorer with 13. He is expected in the lineup tonight when the teams meet at 7:05.

RPI had 32 shots on goal, the first time it had over 30 shots since getting 35 against Sacred Heart on Oct. 19.
