ROCHESTER — A ceremony is being held to honor members of a Rochester-based Army National Guard helicopter unit credited with saving more than 500 lives during its 10-month deployment in Afghanistan.

The ceremony is being held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the National Guard's Army Aviation Support Facility at the Rochester airport, home of Co. F, 1st Battalion, 169th General Support Aviation Battalion.

According to New York National Guard officials, the unit's helicopter crews performed 471 life-saving missions in Afghanistan starting in November 2012, saving a total of 527 lives. Among those transported during medical evacuation flights were American and coalition troops, along with Afghan soldiers and civilians.

Thirty-nine members of Rochester-based unit are being honored during Saturday's ceremony.
