Many young people were thinking about elves in December 1968.

At Schenectady’s Mont Pleasant High School, other young people were thinking about leprechauns. Actors and actresses performed “Finian’s Rainbow” during the holiday month. Terri Singer and William Peake were among the stars of the show.

But St. Patrick’s Day was still three months away, and most people were thinking about Christmas and Hanukkah. Evergreens were on sale at the Mont Pleasant branch of the YMCA, and would be decorated in family living rooms. Strings of lights were hung over Crane Street, as merchants hoped to attract Christmas shoppers.

Children met Santa Claus. Men and women at the Schenectady Post Office kept the holiday spirit in motion by keeping packages large and small in motion — and ready for delivery by Dec. 24.
