An electrician’s apprentice from Glenville who worked at the GlobalFoundries construction site has been arrested in connection with a threat made at the site Monday, state police said.

The threat, police said, came in the form of a note left in a common area. The investigation showed there was no threat to the public at any time, police said.

Charged was Robert Thomas, 25, of Glenville. He is accused of writing the note, stating that explosives were placed at the facility, then leaving it in the common area.

State police, with Global Foundries Security, then investigated, leading to Thomas’ arrest. He faces one count of second-degree falsely reporting an incident, a felony. He was arraigned and ordered held on bail.

The incident led to thousands of construction workers at the GlobalFoundries site being sent home, a GlobalFoundries spokeswoman said. The incident happened in the construction portion of Fab 8.

Spokeswoman Jessica Kerley said earlier normal construction operations are expected to resume today.

“A security threat was made to the construction portion of the Fab 8 site,” Kerley said in a statement issued prior to the arrest announcement.

“In response to this action, we have postponed construction activities for the day.”

She said there was no impact on the semiconductor manufacturing work taking place at Fab 8.

About 3,000 construction workers are currently working at the site, where a $2.3 billion technology development center is under construction, due for completion late next year.

“In order to protect all workers and visitors to the site, Fab 8 has a robust emergency response protocol that consists of various pre-established protocols,” Kerley said. “These protocols are currently being executed.”
