SYRACUSE — A baby two-toed sloth at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse is destined to be a frequent star of educational events.

The youngster introduced to the public on Tuesday was hand-raised by zookeepers, making her quite comfortable around people. Zoo officials say it's the first Hoffmann's two-toed sloth to be successfully raised by hand in the United States.

The baby, named Arana, was born on Aug. 1. She's the 48th of 49 Hoffmann's two-toed sloths born at the zoo. Zookeepers decided to hand-rear her because they suspected one of the adult sloths was out to harm her.

She'll be about the size of a large house cat when she's grown up. Sloths typically sleep 15 hours a day and forage for food in tree tops at night.
