BALLSTON SPA — Tom Schroeder, a town justice in Milton and village justice in Ballston Spa, is resigning because he is moving out of state.
Schroeder has been the village justice for 11 years and is resigning as of Dec. 31 because of a plan to move to South Carolina.
The Village Board this week named Ballston Town Justice Brandi Burns as interim village justice. Mayor John P. Romano said he will also accept applications for a temporary appointment through Dec. 27; a special election will be held in March for the remaining two years in Schroeder’s term.
Village justices do not have to be attorneys; Schroeder was a career counselor.
The village position has an annual salary of $15,964.
Schroeder has also been a Milton town justice since 2010. The annual salary in Milton is $17,187.
Milton Supervisor Dan Lewza said the Town Board will probably make an appointment in February, after the town Republican Committee gives a recommendation. All of the Town Board members are Republicans.
A special election for the Milton justice seat will be held next November.
