Standoff in Schenectady results in weapons charge

A man who threatened to harm himself last week was talked out of his residence safely by city police

A man who threatened to harm himself last week was talked out of his residence safely by city police crisis negotiators, then found in possession of illegal high-capacity gun magazines in his house, authorities said.

Police received a call Dec. 12 that John McEvoy, of 1111 Van Curler Ave., had threatened to harm himself, police spokesman Lt. Mark McCracken said.

After about an hour, McEvoy came out peacefully, McCracken said. During a search of the home to make sure no one else was inside and no one was hurt, police spotted eight 30-round ammunition-feeding devices in his basement, authorities said.

McEvoy, 46, was charged with one count of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony.
