UAlbany vs. Pittsburgh: Danes fall short

Pittsburgh may have been thinking ahead to its Atlantic Coast Conference debut Saturday at North Car

Pittsburgh may have been thinking ahead to its Atlantic Coast Conference debut Saturday at North Carolina State, and University at Albany took advantage by making Tuesday afternoon’s non-conference game much closer than anticipated.

The Panthers needed Cameron Wright’s 14 points, eight rebounds and eight assists to hold off the Great Danes, 58-46.

The Panthers (12-1) mustered enough to remain unbeaten at home. Pitt held UAlbany (6-7) to just 31 percent shooting, outrebounded the Great Danes, 40-27, and outscored them in the paint, 32-14. But it wasn’t pretty.

Lamar Patterson finished with 14 points to become the 42nd player in school history to top 1,000 career points. Talib Zanna chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds for Pitt, which won despite making just one of 10 three-pointers and clanking all six of its free throws during a lethargic first half.

The Great Danes have lost three of four but hung around into the waning moments, twice trimming a 16-point deficit to seven before the Panthers were able to finish things off.

“We didn’t come here to get a check,” UAlbany coach Will Brown said. “We came here to win the game.”

DJ Evans scored 15 of his game-high 18 points in the second half for the Great Danes, who managed to make things competitive despite going more than 13 minutes between field goals during a span crossing the first and second halves.
