Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy is set to name the city’s new assistant fire chief in a ceremony Thursday morning at City Hall, filling a position restored for the 2014 budget year.
Meanwhile, McCarthy said he’s been told by current Fire Chief Michael Della Rocco that he has yet to choose a retirement date. McCarthy said Della Rocco has told him it could be as early as the end of January and will be no later than the end of February.
McCarthy said he hopes to have an interview process completed and a decision on whom to appoint made by the time Della Rocco leaves.
McCarthy declined to name his choice for assistant fire chief.
Della Rocco was the city’s most recent assistant chief. When he became fire chief in April 2011, the assistant chief post was left vacant. It was then restored in the 2014 city budget.
Della Rocco announced during budget talks in September that he intended to retire in 2014, though he did not announce a date then.
