High Schools: Lapi, Ashley get wrestling titles

State finalists Brandon Lapi of Amsterdam and Levi Ashley of Shenendehowa won Section II’s only titl

State finalists Brandon Lapi of Amsterdam and Levi Ashley of Shenendehowa won Section II’s only titles Saturday at the Eastern States Classic.

Lapi, the No. 2 seed went 5-0 at the two-day event, which drew wrestlers from over 125 schools representing six states. The three-time state place finisher won his ECS title when he beat eighth-seeded Sam Ward of Locust Valley, 4-2, in the final.

Lapi, who outscored his five opponents, 19-5, knocked off No. 3 seed Mike Raccioppi of Minisink Valley, 3-1, in the semis.

Ashley, now a three-time top-eight finisher in this event, won his highly aniticipated showdown with Johnson City’s Reggie Williams by scoring a 9-4 win in the 195-pound title bout.

Ashley was seeded second to Williams at last year’s state tourney, but Williams was upset in the second round.

Ashley beat Colonie’s Wayne Burt, 15-5, in the semis. Burt went on to place sixth, dropping an 8-7 decision to Beacon’s Andrew Grella in this fifth-place match.

Schalmont’s Tim Flower also placed at 195, coming back from a first-round loss to take eighth,

Schalmont also had state finalist Nick Gallo finish fifth at 182, and 285-pounder Marcus Ramundo take seventh. Gallo dropped a 2-1 tiebreaker decision to Dan Smith of South Jefferson, then finished his tourney with a 3-2 win over David Hamil of Deer Park.

Ramundo, who was seeded 12th, dropped his first match, then roared through the consolations, pinning Mazan Hassan of Monsignor Farrell in his last match. He pinned second-seeded Austin DiCerbo of Colonie in the bout that determined which would advance to the medal round.

The Sabres had three top-eight finishers, tops among Section II teams.

Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake senior Joey Butler finished fourth at 145, losing to rival Tom Dutton of Rocky Point in the semis.

Shen junior Jesse Porter beat Columbia’s second-seeded Ang­elo Kress, 5-4, in the quarters, then dropped a 4-3 semi to Blaise Benderoth of North Rockland in the semis before finishing fifth.

The other Section II place finishers were Columbia’s John Devine (eighth at 106), Colonie’s Gllan Cohen (7th/113), Hoosick Falls state champ Luis Weierbach (6th/120), Salem’s Carter Merecki (6th/132), Duanesburg’s Connor Lawrence (7th/160), Franky Nassivera of Queensbury (6th/170) and Geno Brancati of Hudson Falls (8th/170).

David Wolanski (99) and Josh LoGiudice (106) won titles for Guilderland at the Mount Anthony (Vt.) Tournament.

Andy Cummings got to the 170 final, and Elijah Clemente (3rd/152), Zak Alloush (4th/132) and Mike Lainhart (4th/120) also placed for the Dutchmen.

Saratoga Springs went 5-0 at the Dominick Kossman Duals at Schoharie, beating Albany Academy, Canajoharie/Fort Plain, the host Indians, Albany and Voorheesvillle.

Albany Academy went 4-1, and picked up both MOW awards, as Matt Morris and Cam Miliken were honored.

Bethlehem had five winners, and Galway came away with three in the championship round at the Schenectady Invitational.

Ditaye Douglas scored a pin at 170 for Schenectady’s lone victory in the finals.

Rowan Braga (113), Tristan Can­ova (126), Gabe Naviasky (132), Chris Tangora (220) and Jake Groesbeck (285) were the Bethlehem winners, and Jordan Sartin (120), Steven Culbert (145) and Dillan Palaszewski (99) prevailed for Galway.

Ballston Spa got championship-match wins from Tyler Barnes (138) and Garreck Golish (195).

Devin Murphy scored 25 points, Trevon Perez-Tucker collected 10 rebounds, six assists and five steals and Schalmont beat Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk, 81-60.

Murphy made six of Schalmont’s 10 three-point baskets, and Matt Ferriero connected on six of the Indians’ 10 threes.

Zac O’Dell had 14 points and Nick Bird added 12 for the Sabres. Ferriero paced the Indians with 18, and Dave Warnken netted 14.

Robert Shippee scored 23 points, Zack Shippee put in 21 and the Corinth tandem went a combined 17-for-24 from the line in the Tomahawks’ 76-56 Adirondack League win over Salem.

Andrew Hoag led a trio of double-digit Hoosick Falls scorers with 21 points, and the Panthers defeated Greenwich, 60-43, in Wasaren League action.

Ray Jerome had 15 points, and John Moutopoulos chipped in with 11 as Albany Academy edged Long Island Lutheran in a non-league game, 53-50.

Jamil Hood Jr. scored 15 points, and Green Tech beat Christopher Columbus of the Bronx, 75-46, in another non-league contest.

Mike Mann scored 24 points on eight threes, and Alex Mulvey delivered a season-high 17 points as Mekeel Christian Academy beat Middleburgh, 86-63, in a Western Athletic Conference game Friday.

Mekeel and Berne-Knox-Westerlo are both 4-0 in the WAC Southern Division after the Bulldogs topped Schoharie Friday, 44-38, behind Maclin Norray’s 25 points.

Haley Kilmartin scored five of her 20 points in overtime, and Abby Boyer notched a career-high 26 points, in Fort Plain’s 52-51 non-league overtime win against Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons.

Boyer made 16 free throws on 19 attempts.

Taylia Williams sparked the Golden Knights with 31 points, and had all of their eight overtime points. Jarrell Paris scored eight points for ND-BG, and forced overtime on a three-pointer.

Mary Pattison generated 15 points, and Kiana Patterson had 13 with four threes in Troy’s

53-42 non-league win over Oneonta.

Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk pulled away from a third-quarter tie and beat Schalmont, 35-28, in the Col­onial Council.

Bailey Kross led the Indians with 12 points. Hailee Metzold scored 11 for the Sabres.
