High Schools: Lapi, Ashley get wrestling titles

State finalists Brandon Lapi of Amsterdam and Levi Ashley of Shenendehowa won Section II’s only titl

State finalists Brandon Lapi of Amsterdam and Levi Ashley of Shenendehowa won Section II’s only titles Saturday at the Eastern States Classic.

Lapi, the No. 2 seed went 5-0 at the two-day event, which drew wrestlers from over 125 schools representing six states. The three-time state place finisher won his ECS title when he beat eighth-seeded Sam Ward of Locust Valley, 4-2, in the final.

Lapi, who outscored his five opponents, 19-5, knocked off No. 3 seed Mike Raccioppi of Minisink Valley, 3-1, in the semis.

Ashley, now a three-time top-eight finisher in this event, won his highly aniticipated showdown with Johnson City’s Reggie Williams by scoring a 9-4 win in the 195-pound title bout.

Ashley was seeded second to Williams at last year’s state tourney, but Williams was upset in the second round.

Ashley beat Colonie’s Wayne Burt, 15-5, in the semis. Burt went on to place sixth, dropping an 8-7 decision to Beacon’s Andrew Grella in this fifth-place match.

Schalmont’s Tim Flower also placed at 195, coming back from a first-round loss to take eighth,

Schalmont also had state finalist Nick Gallo finish fifth at 182, and 285-pounder Marcus Ramundo take seventh. Gallo dropped a 2-1 tiebreaker decision to Dan Smith of South Jefferson, then finished his tourney with a 3-2 win over David Hamil of Deer Park.

Ramundo, who was seeded 12th, dropped his first match, then roared through the consolations, pinning Mazan Hassan of Monsignor Farrell in his last match. He pinned second-seeded Austin DiCerbo of Colonie in the bout that determined which would advance to the medal round.

The Sabres had three top-eight finishers, tops among Section II teams.

Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake senior Joey Butler finished fourth at 145, losing to rival Tom Dutton of Rocky Point in the semis.

Shen junior Jesse Porter beat Columbia’s second-seeded Angelo Kress, 5-4, in the quarters, then dropped a 4-3 semi to Blaise Benderoth of North Rockland in the semis before finishing fifth.

The other Section II place finishers were Columbia’s John Devine (eighth at 106), Colonie’s Gllan Cohen (7th/113), Hoosick Falls state champ Luis Weierbach (6th/120), Salem’s Carter Merecki (6th/132), Duanesburg’s Connor Lawrence (7th/160), Franky Nassivera of Queensbury (6th/170) and Geno Brancati of Hudson Falls (8th/170).

David Wolanski (99) and Josh LoGiudice (106) won titles for Guilderland at the Mount Anthony (Vt.) Tournament.

Andy Cummings got to the 170 final, and Elijah Clemente (3rd/152), Zak Alloush (4th/132) and Mike Lainhart (4th/120) also placed for the Dutchmen.

Saratoga Springs went 5-0 at the Dominick Kossman Duals at Schoharie, beating Albany Academy, Canajoharie/Fort Plain, the host Indians, Albany and Voorheesvillle.

Albany Academy went 4-1, and picked up both MOW awards, as Matt Morris and Cam Miliken were honored.
