Early January, and holiday times have truly ended.

Christmas trees are down, party hats are back in storage and the winter blues settle in.

But winter doesn’t have to be bleak. As long as people have sweaters, skis, skates and snowmen, the white season can be the right season for recreation.

People in 1984 and 1985 found seasonal diversions in their respective Januaries. And even people who were not fans of cold weather learned that January thaws — and moments outside in 40-degree temperatures — can be pleasant ways to begin a new year.
